Abstract

For the past week or so the Republicans and their agents and allies among the Democrats--the disreputable McCarthys and McCarrans along with the oh-so-respectable Stassens--I-have been going for the Truman administration hammer and tongs. Their main "charge," sometimes largely hidden behind a red smokescreen, is that back in 1949 the State Department was planning to dump Chiang Kai-shek, recognize the new government of China, and set the stage for a peaceful settlement of major international issues in the Far East.
