About a year ago, the Union of Soviet Writers invited the Authors World Peace Appeal, of which I am a signatory, to send a group of writers to visit them in the Soviet Union. For my own part, I said "yes" without giving it a thought. I had been in Russia for a couple of months in 1931 and the more I heard of present-day conditions, the more puzzled I was, and the more I wanted to see for myself. But it wasn't too easy to get our group together.
