The Fallacy of the "Superstructure"

Abstract

Present-day Russian, Chinese, and Albanian Marxists do not seem to agree on very much, but one thing they do agree on is that society is divided into "the base" and "the superstructure." Hardly an issue of the Beijing Review goes by without a reference to this doctrine, and it forms the framework for the theoretical and political books and periodicals from all three countries. Yet there is no basis for the doctrine in Marx, and it is, in fact, the antithesis of Marxism.
