Labor and Monopoly Capital in the Labor Education Context

Bruce Nissen, Peter Seybold

The impact of Harry Braverman's Labor and Monopoly Capital on the field of labor education has been enormous. An entire generation of labor educators and labor studies faculty developed their understanding of the labor process in advanced monopoly capitalist societies through this book and the immense literature it spawned. To this day, both Labor and Monopoly Capital and books inspired by it—Andrew Zimbalist's edited volume Case Studies on the Labor Process and Dan Clawson's Bureaucracy and the Labor Process (both also published by Monthly Review Press) come to mind—are frequently utilized in labor studies classes. Some of the unique strengths of this book are most evident to labor educators because of the unusual nature of our occupation.
